Sylvester James Gates, Jr.

From Wired Magazine pbs.org

Pioneering new territory.

When Science Emulates Nature and Vice Versa

I knew this all along! Yah right.

Still I found this theory to be incredibly inspiring.
clipped from www.pbs.org

Gates is widely recognized for his ability to communicate the complex ideas at the forefront of theoretical physics to a general audience. During a PBS interview, he summed up his feelings about science this way, “trying to understand the most fundamental structure and issues for our universe—is a birthright for all of us. For me there is a personal joy in participating in that adventure. It belongs to everybody, just like great art and great music belongs to everybody. Great science belongs to everybody.”

Dr. Gates sat down with WIRED Science to explain just what’s so ‘super’ about superstring theory and why the complexities of theoretical physics should matter to all of us.

Will Social Networking be Coming to Your Cell Phone?

They say it is so but first we need to convince the advertisers.
clipped from www.rcrnews.com
The move underscores a phenomenal expansion from Facebook in recent months. Once a destination solely for college students, the site has morphed into a place where both students and professionals can create profiles, post updates and exchange messages. Like other successful sites such as Flickr and MySpace, Facebook’s site accepts widgets for third-party applications, allowing users one-click access to other social networking destinations.
Just how lucrative the mobile social networking space might be is still uncertain, however. Wireless startups are drawing impressive numbers, but some are struggling to generate the advertising revenues necessary to fuel the business. Advertisers new to the space are opting to allocate their ad dollars to more familiar, high-profile brands instead of newcomers whose names may not be recognizable by mainstream consumers.

    The Brick is Back!

It is a one month waiting list to own this current version of this retro beauty.

    clipped from www.intomobile.com

Remember how, back in the day, cellular phones were a rarity and brick-sized monstrosities were actually bad-ass (anyone remember Zack Morris of “Saved By The Bell”)? We’ve come a long way from then - these days, mobile phones can do just about anything and come in tiny, barely there packages. So, why would Motorola think there was a market for this monstrosity? Perhaps Moto’s recent financial woes have spurred the manufacturing giant to rethink it’s market appeal - seeing as how their current marketing strategy doesn’t seem to be working all that well.

    It was cutting edge technology.

The first cell phone sold for $3, 995. It weighed 2 pounds and offered a whopping 1/2 hour off talk time before you had to recharge.

In 1984 people were lining up in droves to buy this monstrosity.
Well in technical terms this first cell phone has truly turned into something of monsterous proportions.

Cell phones are not just for making phone calls anymore.

I found the following remark interesting. The value of mobile data services exceeds teh value of paid services on the internet.

In other words people buy more stuff from phones than on the internet. What are they buying? Read on...
    clipped from en.wikipedia.org

The total value of mobile data services exceeds the value of paid services on the internet, and was worth 31 billion dollars in 2006 (source Informa).[citation needed] The largest categories of mobile services are music, picture downloads, videogaming, adult entertainment, gambling, video/TV.

    Cell phone etiquette

I agree with everything said here except in toilets. Why should you not let your phone ring while you are in the toilet. On the other hand some people on the other end of the line may not be happy to hear of your private actions while in conversation. Flushing and tinkling are dead give aways.
    clipped from en.wikipedia.org

Mobile telephone use etiquette is an important matter of social discourtesy, phones ringing during funerals, weddings, in toilets, cinemas, and plays. Users often speak loudly, leading to book shops, libraries, bathrooms, cinemas, doctors' offices, and houses of worship prohibiting their uses, and, in some places, the installation of signal-jamming equipment to prevent their use (though in many countries, including the U.S., such equipment is currently illegal). Some new buildings, such as auditoriums, have installed wire mesh in the walls (making it a Faraday cage) which prevents signal penetration that does not violate signal jamming laws.

    Cell Phones and the Internet

I found this statement quite remarkable.

Is this going to be a world wide trend? Will the instant gratification of using our cell phone to access internet information become commonplace in the future?

If so how is cell phone technology being developed to encompass this growing audience?
    clipped from en.wikipedia.org

Many telephones offer Instant Messenger services for simple, easy texting. Mobile phones have Internet service (e.g. NTT DoCoMo's i-mode), offering text messaging via e-mail in Japan, South Korea, China, and India. In Europe, 30–40 per cent of internet access is via mobile telephone. Most mobile internet access is much different from computer access, featuring alerts, weather data, e-mail, search engines, instant messages, and game and music downloading; most mobile internet access is hurried and short.
