Mobile Navigation - Soft Keys

Mobile Application design is new territory. The metaphor for navigation has not been completely defined however one thing remains certain, without a standard keyboard and mouse for navigation on mobile devices creativity for ease of use is key.

Adding the accesskey attribute to link a lets users “click” on that link by simply pressing a number on their phone’s keypad. Valid values for accesskey can be 0-9,#, and * (all of the keys on a standard phone keypad). Displaying which key will activate a link is up to the application as most phones won’t tell the user that a link has an access key. Web site designers currently need to decide on a consistent way to inform users that an access key is associated with a given link. Most apps will use ordered lists where the order of the links corresponds with the access keys. Putting the number in brackets inside or next to the link is another way to denote the accesskey.

CNN’s mobile site makes good use of accesskeys. They have chosen to associate the main sections of their web site with the access keys 1 through 9:

Using Navigation Keys to Control Cursor on A Mobile Phone.

Mobile Top Soft is using the Curser Feature on Their mobile phones to emulate a browser experience.

An interesting thing they do is enable long and short key strokes to enable onestep or smooth scrolling across a page.

The non-touchscreen browser introduces a virtual cursor that is controlled with the keyboard navigational keys. Using short presses (clicks) on the directional pad's left key will quickly navigate through clickable elements. Longer presses on the left key will begin smooth scrolling, similar to the Nokia s60 3th edition phones integrated browser.

AOL Beats Google Mobile.

Looks like AOL may be back in the game when it comes to mobile marketing.
clipped from www.moconews.net

image image What could AOL’s purchase of Bebo mean in the mobile space? Compared to Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) and Google (NSDQ: GOOG), AOL (NYSE: TWX) hasn’t grabbed the same number of headlines when it comes to wireless news. But according to research firm Hitwise, the US traffic to AOL’s mobile web site last year was actually higher than Google Mobile, and nearly twice that of MSN Mobile. AOL has also been working hard to rehaul its online assets for mobile. In October last year, it announced it had upgraded its WAP portal with brand new versions of its search and email as well as improved AIM functionality, including a text message-based AIM short code service and a GPS-enabled widget called AIM Buddy Finder. It also announced a mobile portal in the works. Its master plan is to eventually offer a suite of tools in its AOL MyMobile portal, much like Yahoo does with its Go browser which houses its “One” mobile applications.
